Professional Development Opportunities from CALPRO

Posted on 04/08/2014

Two professional development opportunities are coming this month from California Adult Literacy Professional Development Project (CALPRO External link opens in new window or tab).

Integrate Basic Skills with Career Training

The online course Integrating Education and Training (IET) will help you become familiar with several different models for teaching basic skills and vocational skills at the same time. It will guide you in finding the best model for your program and student needs, and taking the steps needed to make it happen. Have you been hearing about the success of programs that combine basic skills or ESL instruction with vocational classes? Want to create a plan for your agency but not sure where to begin? Consider applying for this CALPRO online course that starts on April 28 and runs for 4 weeks.

This opportunity is intended for agency teams committed to collaborating on the development and implementation of a plan for establishing or building upon an IET model. Agencies must apply as a team consisting of an administrator and a team of two instructors representing two roles: 1) a basic skills (i.e. ABE, ESL) instructor and 2) a technical skills instructor. Teams of three, representing each of the three roles, are preferred, but teams consisting of an administrator and two basic skills instructors will be accepted. Teams consisting of an administrator and one instructor will also be considered.

In this course you will:

  • Review the research on IET models;
  • Assess the degree of readiness of your program to implement an IET model;
  • Identify which IET model is best suited for your program and what next steps are needed to begin implementation;
  • Create an action plan for implementing an IET model.
