National Coalition for Literacy 2010 Leadership Award Nominations Open

The National Coalition for Literacy (NCL) is seeking nominations for its' 2010 Literacy Leadership Awards.  The NCL Literacy Leadership Awards honor outstanding adult literacy leaders in the United States who have made significant contributions in the field of adult literacy, and who serve as an inspiration and model to others in the field.  The Award receives national coverage, and is used to raise awareness and visibility of adult literacy issues among Congressional representatives and staff, media and other educational partners.

There will be an Award Reception held in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 15th, 2010.  The deadline for nominations is May 28th, 2010. 

In 2009, the NCL Literacy Leadership Awards recipients included:

  • Singer/songwriter Gretchen Wilson in honor of her demonstrated and deep commitment to supporting literacy on the local, state and national level. She earned her GED in 2008.
  • Sen. Patricia Murray of Washington for her efforts to secure additional funding for programs that serve adult education and job retraining needs and her leadership on the Workforce Investment Act reauthorization.
  • Rep. Raul Grijalva (Ariz.) for his work on legislation to raise awareness and fiscal commitment in Congress for programs that serve adults in need of literacy, higher education and English-language learning.
  • Dorcas Place, a Providence, R.I., program for its powerful record of success in assisting low-income adults in realizing their full potential through literacy, employment, advocacy and community involvement.
  •  The Home Safety Council, a national organization devoted to making home-safety information accessible to all Americans.
  • Posthumously, to Calvin Miles, a former adult literacy student-turned-tireless international advocate for the inclusion of adult learners in decision-making about their programs and instruction.

To nominate a leader for the 2010 Awards, please submit the following information:

  • Nominee's name
  • Business title
  • Brief explanation of why this person should be considered as an outstanding leader

The NCL's mission is to advance adult education, family literacy, and English language acquisition in the U.S. by increasing public awareness for the need to increase funding and programs; promoting effective public policy; and serving as an authoritative resource for the field on national adult education issues.
