Description: Bethany Rich has medium-length, dark brown hair, tied back in a ponytail. She is wearing an off-white top with a high neck that ties in a knot at the neck. The first slide is entitled U.S. Citizenship Test Online Quizzes. The text is green with a variegated green bar beneath. The subtitle reads: Old Marshall Adult Education Center Sacramento, California; Bethany Rich, Special Project Teacher/EL Civics Coordinator.

Bethany Rich: Hi my name is Bethany Rich and I'm from Old Marshall Adult Education Center which is here in Sacramento and my project with my mentee was on U.S. Citizenship tests. We did a series of online quizzes.

So here's some information about Old Marshall. This is data from 2006 and 2007.

Description: Slide entitled Old Marshall Adult Education Center. The title text is in green and the bullet point text is black. They are:

  • Serve 7,600 students annually at Old Marshal, Florin Technology and 45 Outreach sites
  • 1,261 ADA (class time)
  • 540 ADA (distance learning)
  • ESL, ABE/GED, Parent Ed., Citizenship, Distance Learning, Computers, Keyboarding, EMT, Paramedic, Forklift Certification, Construction, Automotive Accessory Installation, Automotive Glass Installation, Advanced Auto Electric, Introduction to Video & Television Production

Bethany: We serve about 7,600 students annually at Old Marshall, Florin Technology and we have about 45 outreach sites. In 2006 to 2007, we had 1,261 ADA for class time and then about 540 ADA for distance learning. So we're a pretty large program. We have many ESL classes, ABE/GED classes, Citizenship, and a number of vocational classes also.

This is my mentee who actually was able to make it today. She's in the back of the room. Her name is…yay…her name is Marcella Torres and she's a citizenship teacher at Florin Technology.

Description: There is audience applause during the introduction of Marcella. The slide shown is entitled About my Mentee. There is a photo of Marcella Torres, She has long dark hair with dark eyes and a bright smile. She is wearing a sleeveless beige top. They are:

  • Marcella Torres, Citizenship Teacher at Florin Technology
  • The challenge: how to best help students with a wide range of English language and literacy skills practice the 100 U.S. history and government questions
  • Our response: With technology, of course! We've created a series of online multiple-choice quizzes with audio clips to accompany each question and possible answer

Description: Bethany continues at the podium.

Bethany: Marcella identified a need among her citizenship class. Her challenge was how to best help the students in her class that have a very wide range of English language ability and also literacy skills. These students need to learn 100 government and history questions for the citizenship exam so that is quite a challenge for her. So we responded by using technology. We created a series of online multiple-choice quizzes with audio clips that accompany each question and each possible answer. So, even students with no literacy skills could interact with these quizzes and learn the hundred civics questions.

Description: The next slide is called The Project: They are:

  • Created 10 multiple-choice quizzes using Hot Potatoes
  • Recorded audio of each question and possible response using Audacity
  • Uploaded images, when appropriate, from Flickr and Wikimedia Commons
  • Created a home/index page using Dreamweaver

The subtitle The Quizzes is at the bottom of the slide in gold, underlined text.

Bethany: So the project is ten multiple-choice quizzes that we created using Hot Potatoes. Marcella created audio for every question and every possible response in Audacity. And then we uploaded images when it was appropriate from Flickr and Wikimedia Commons and then created a home page or index page using Dreamweaver, which I'm going to show you now. It's going to come up in Firefox since that's the default browser and I'm going to put it into Internet Explorer because it kind of doesn't look right. So let me just copy this

Description: Bethany is working on the podium computer to get the browser to open. There are several seconds of silence as she works.

Bethany: OK — so this is what the students will see, either if it's posted on a Web site or from a CD.

Description: This slide is entitled – The United States Citizenship Test . The subtitle is Quizzes: 100 Civics Questions. There is a picture of the Statue of Liberty standing in front of an American flag on the left side with white text below reading: Created by Bethany Rich, Marcella Torres & Bruce Moon for Old Marshall Adult Education Center. The footer reads: Sacramento City Unified School District; Old Marshall Adult Education Center, 2718 G Street, Sacramento, CA 95816. The main body of the slide says:

Select a Quiz Below

Citizenship Quiz A
Citizenship Quiz B
Citizenship Quiz C
Citizenship Quiz D
Citizenship Quiz E

Citizenship Quiz F
Citizenship Quiz G
Citizenship Quiz H
Citizenship Quiz I
Citizenship Quiz J

Bethany: They just get to select one of the 10 citizenship quizzes so I'll show you Citizenship Quiz A.

Description: Bethany is working on the podium computer to open the quiz. There are several seconds of silence as she works.

Bethany:OK – so the students have 10 questions in Citizenship Quiz A and they have the audio for each question.

Description: The slide shows the first question: Who becomes President if both the President and Vice President die? There are four possible answers:

  1. The First Lady
  2. The Speaker of the House
  3. The National Security Advisor
  4. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court

There is a color photo of each person associated with each answer.

Computer: Number one. Who becomes president if both the president and vice president die?

Description: Bethany continues at the podium

Bethany: Any takers?

Audience member: The First Lady, of course.

Bethany: The First Lady?

Computer: A, the First Lady. No, try again.

Bethany: Who?

Audience member: B

Bethany: B, Speaker of the House.

Computer: That's correct. The Speaker of the House becomes President if both the president and vice president die.

Bethany: OK – so everything has the response and audio. I'll just show you a few more. So here's number two.

Description: The next slide shows the second question: Who is the current Governor of California? There are four possible answers:

  1. George W. Bush
  2. Dick Cheney
  3. Arnold Schwarzenegger
  4. Condoleezza Rice

There is a color photo of each person associated with each answer.

Computer: Number two. Who is the current governor of California?

Audience member: I'm the governor. (Spoken with the Schwarzenegger accent)

Computer: That's correct. Arnold Schwarzenegger is the governor of California.

Bethany: OK – so you get the idea. It just continues and then the students can either go back to the home page or continue on to the next quiz in the series; Citizenship Quiz B, for example. And then they have 10 more questions.

Audience member: What's your Web site's address?

Bethany: OK – we don't currently have it posted on the Web site yet. That's actually what's next. I just actually got everything on a CD last night, so it can auto-run from a CD and then the students can use it. And eventually, I'd like to get it on a Web site so that it could be available to people throughout the whole country actually. So that's the next step – is get the CD to our Citizenship teachers since many of them don't have Internet access in their classes.

Description: The next slide is called What's Next…: The title text is in green and the bullet point text is black. They are:

  • Get the CD to Citizenship teachers
  • Have students start using the quizzes
  • Observe students and make any necessary changes
  • Revise the questions in October/November 2008 to reflect the redesigned citizenship test and election results

Bethany: We obviously want to have the students start using the quizzes. And then I'd like to observe the students and then make any necessary changes to see if there are any challenges with using the program. And then, of course, we will be revising the questions in October and November to reflect the redesigned citizenship test and then also the election results.

So I'd just like to thank my mentee, Marcella Torres, my colleague, Bruce Moon, who is not here today, but has been a tremendous support. He really has amazing technology expertise, so he's been wonderful.

Description: The next slide is called Special Thanks to…: The title text is in green and the bullet point text is black. They are:

  • My mentee, Marcella Torres, for her hard work on this project and dedication to her students
  • My colleague, Bruce Moon, for sharing his technology expertise with us
  • My Super Mentor, Penny Pearson, for her guidance and encouragement
  • My Principal, Mary Prather, for supporting my participation in TIMAC

Description: Bethany continues at the podium

Bethany: And of course, Penny and my Principal, Mary Prather, and my Vice Principal, Jacqueline Matranga, who was able to make it today, and then of course, OTAN, for helping us to enhance technology in adult education. Thank you.

Description: Audience applause. Screen fades to black.
