Description: First slide shown is a black and white photo of Mia and a student working on an interactive whiteboard on a red background. The title is: My TIMAC Experience, Mia Reed, ESL Teacher/EL Civics Coordinator. Mia is a young, pretty, energetic woman with dark hair and eyes. She is wearing a gray t-shirt with a large mother-of-pearl medallion necklace. She smiles as she starts her presentation.

The next slide shows a photo of her mentee, Julie, with a student and the bullet points are:

  • PowerPoint
  • Flash Drive

Mia Reed: In the beginning of our training, I wasn't familiar enough with PowerPoint to train someone else. I thought, oh I've use PowerPoint, I can teach her. Get her in there and I'm like, how do I show her that? So I have to go back to my computer, figure it out, so the next time we get together I can tell her how to do it.

Description: The next slide is entitled Power Point – The Process. It is green with white text. There are crayon graphics in the corners.

  • In the beginning of our training, I wasn't familiar enough with PowerPoint to train someone else
  • I found myself stumbling through the program as we worked together
  • It made me spend time on my own, getting a better understanding on how to use the program
  • Now, I'm comfortable with the program and have trained others

Mia: I found myself stumbling through the program as we worked together. But it did make me spend more time getting a better understanding of how to use the program and then going for some additional training and now I'm very comfortable with it and have trained others.

Description: This slide has a brown background with white text. There are orange crayon graphic in the corners. It shows a photo of Silvia working in a computer lab with her students. The bullet points are:

  • Photo Story 3
  • New Scanner

Mia: Silvia was my next mentee. Silvia, I got an opportunity to teach her how to use Photo Story 3 and we also purchased a new scanner. She is our computer lab teacher and the way our lab works is one day a week, we have five ESL classes in the morning, each class rotates in the lab one day a week. And so my lab day is Tuesday so for one hour, the first hour, half my students go to the lab, I teach the same lesson to the other half in the classroom, and then the second hour the other half go. And currently she works predominately with computer-based ESL software and I want to see her get away from that. And so I trained her on photo story and this semester will be the first semester we'll be implementing this with my class.

So I'm really excited to see that used. A quote from Silvia, "I absolutely love my new scanner. Mia taught me how to use it and set it up. I uploaded some old family pictures. I used those pictures in my Photo Story 3 project. What I love about Photo Story 3 is that it is so simple to use. Mia was a very patient teacher and was able to answer all of my questions. I'm excited to do this project with our ESL students."

  • This spring, we will be implementing this program with our first ESL class

Mia: The process with Silvia, in her quote like she said, we used her scanner to upload her pictures into the presentation. She created a short three-minute presentation about herself and her family. Our IT guys quickly installed Photo Story 3 on all 25 computers in the lab and this spring we will be implementing this program with our first ESL class.

Well, interesting enough, Wayne is the one that does the weekly newsletter but, I'm supposed to send a tech tip every week but so far it's only happened to get in there about once a month' so we're workin' on that.

Our nursing/medical assistant teacher, we bought one for her and she said. "The digital presenter is awesome. I use it in two ways. First, I use it to scan. I scan the pictures and upload them the day before a presentation to show my students. Secondly, I use it on the fly in a class, when I want to show a picture or a page in a textbook. It's wonderful and has really enhanced my class presentations. Mia has been helpful whenever I have had questions or problems."

It is divided into six categories. They are Life Skills, EL Civics, Technology Lessons, Internet Links, ESL Department Calendar, and Workshops and Events. She clicks on the EL Civics category and the next screen shows four areas of focus. They are employment, health, housing, and parenting. Mia continues her presentation.

Mia: Next the incorporation of technology into EL Civics; this semester we gave each of our ESL and CBET teachers a flash drive with all of the EL Civics curriculum installed on it. Our curriculum was created utilizing Word, PowerPoint, and Smart Notebook. Our curriculum is currently being posted on our ESL Web site. I'll just show you that quickly. This is a Web site that I was able to develop last year and it's still a work in progress. Many of you got to see it, I believe, in January and if you go here you can see some of our curriculum split into three categories.; currently, employment, health, and housing. We'll be adding parenting to that this year. And this project is complete.
