Celebrate National Family Literacy Day: November 1, 2012

Join with educators around the country to celebrate National Family Literacy Day® (www), November 1, 2012, and National Family Literacy Month® by promoting and participating in literacy events that build awareness and support family literacy and learning.  

With leadership from the National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL) (www), special projects that support literacy providers and students will include:

  • The 2013 Toyota Teacher of the Year Award: Applications will soon be announced for this award that recognizes outstanding teachers who demonstrate exceptional educational practices in family learning and parent engagement. The winner will receive $20,000 for his or her program and a trip to the National Conference on Family Literacy (www). Read about the 2012 award recipient at 2012 Toyota Teacher of the Year (www).
  • Mini-grants: Online applications will be open on November 1, 2012 for 10-20 mini-grants of $500 each for teacher-led programs and events that emphasize intergenerational participation and learning.
  • For parents in literacy programs: Cultivating Readers, a parent guide to building reading skills in children, will be available in print and online in English and Spanish free of charge for a limited time. Release date for this publication is November 12, 2012.
