Life Skills, College, and Readiness Guide for ESOL Learners is a new, free resource for teachers to use in helping ESOL students develop the skills and knowledge they need to reach their goals – whether related to academic, job or life skills.

Developed by the Massachusetts Department of Adult and Secondary Education, the System for Adult Basic Education Support and with technical assistance from the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL), the document provides a wide variety of sample competencies, activities and ideas for teachers to use in their ESOL classrooms. Many can also be adapted for use in ABE classrooms.

Life Skills, College, and Readiness Guide for ESOL Learners is divided into three levels, basic (SPLs 0-3), intermediate (SPLs 4-5), and advanced (SPL 6).

The authors recommend a wide range of uses for the materials, including:

  • Teachers can use the lesson ideas in their classrooms, at no cost
  • The materials can be matched to student goals – for example, college or job
  • Competencies and benchmarks, life skills, academic, and career indicators are included, as well as listening, reading, and writing activity suggestions
  • The materials can guide individual and program wide lessons and curriculum

Teachers are invited to use, or adapt, materials in the RTF (rich text format) version of the document at by visiting www.sabes.org.  The authors hope that Life Skills, College, and Readiness Guide for ESOL Learners will become a living, changing document by having practitioners use and adapt the materials over time.
