International Literacy Day is on September 8, 2009.  What will you do to contribute? Here are some ideas from the National Coalition for Literacy (NCL).

  • Share your literacy ideas and resources with colleagues for inclusion in the Toolkit published by NCL. Submit your ideas for celebrating International Literacy, and they may be published.
  • Find out about resources for International Literacy Day in the NCL Clearinghouse and Toolkit.  You can find links to web sites, fact sheets on health and adult literacy, as well as other ideas.
  • Check out Ideas for celebrating with students and colleagues. For example, get involved with Reading Across the Continents, a project that unites students and teachers around the world through shared reading of novels.
  • Become informed by reading current Adult Literacy Fact Sheets and Health Literacy Fact Sheet

Read more about the scope and history of International Literacy Day.  This year’s focus is on the empowering role of literacy and its importance for participation, citizenship and social development. Literacy and Empowerment is the theme for the 2009-2010 biennium of the United Nations Literacy Decade.
