The California Department of Education (CDE) and the California Council for Adult Education (CCAE) are presenting the first phase of evidence-based reading instruction training for ABE teachers. The training consists of 36 hours of instruction over two days in November, 2 days in January, and two days in the spring. Select a team of one or more teachers with an administrator to apply. The tuition is $750 for teachers with no charge for administrators.

Teachers will receive training by nationally trained facilitators on evidence based instruction, including how to assess students and how to teach fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. They will also receive access to the online Toolkit, membership in the CA STAR email list, and support from CDE consultants.

Teachers should be currently teaching ABE students with a reading score at or below 235 on the CASAS. This training is not for ESL teachers. More information and the application form are available online, and the application is due October 17. For more information, contact Vicki Anderson Prater, vprater@cde.ca.gov or Sandy Price, sandyprice03@frontiernet.net.
