New Class Activities Based on "This I Believe"

Posted on 03/07/2008

Looking for ideas for writing or discussion topics? OTAN has posted a new classroom activity based on the NPR radio series, This I Believe. These are short, 5 minute essays that are read by the author on a variety of topics related to what they believe about life. They are thought-provoking, and appropriate for ABE, ASE and higher levels of ESL.

For example, Tony Hawk, a professional skateboarder, talks about his struggle to do what he loves even though high school counselors tried to talk him out of it, and how it has paid off for him. He encourages his children, and everyone else, to stick with their passion.

The class activities contain links to several essays, along with samples of classroom discussion and writing activities put together by Kristi Reyes at MiraCosta and Beth Bogage at San Diego Community College District. Check them out!
