Statewide Needs Assessment
The Web site for the Adult Education strategic planning process was recently updated with the posting of the statewide needs assessment. The needs assessment, begun in January of this year, is a body of research to help inform the planning process. Research will continue during the subsequent stages of developing a statewide strategic plan. The first planning meeting took place November 19th with a convening of the Steering Committee, the Field Partnership Team, and the Adult Education Office consultants. The planning phase will take place through April, 2010.

Data Portal

Federal Performance Data (Workforce Investment Act, Title II) Now Available
Check the CASAS Data Portal for 2008-09 California WIA Title II Federal Performance data. Agencies can use the data to compare their "Persistence" and "Performance" over time with the statewide data, other agency data, and data according to provider, region, and size.

Brenda Dann-Messier

OVAE Assistant Secretary Addresses College Transition Summit
OVAE Assistant Secretary Brenda Dann-Messier addressed the California Adult Literacy Professional Development Project's California College Transition Summit on October 29. She focused on the importance of President Obama's efforts to increase the number of adult education students transitioning from basic skills and English language programs to community colleges. Nearly 100 of California's adult education administrators from K–12 school districts and community college districts attended the summit.

California WIA II 2008-09 Annual Performance Report
Statewide data shows improvement in learner "Persistence" and "Performance" for all Educational Functioning Levels. Every year the United States Department of Education (Division of Adult Education and Literacy) poses four questions to all states and territories receiving federal supplementary funding from the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act (of the Workforce Investment Act, Title II). This report presents California's response to those questions.

Regional Workshops
The California Adult Literacy Professional Development Project (CALPRO) is coordinating regionally offered face-to-face workshops. Registration is now open for January 2010 workshops such as Organizing and Managing ABE Instruction, Teaching Critical Thinking, and Learner Goal Setting. Register online.
