Brenda Dann-Messier Confirmed
Brenda Dann-Messier has been confirmed as the Assistant Secretary for the Office of Vocational and Adult Education at the U.S. Department of Education.  In this role, she will oversee the administration of high school, career technical and adult education; lifelong learning; community colleges; and workforce and economic development programs across the country.

The Adult Education Office at the California Department of Education (CDE) welcomes two new consultants, Noelia Ramirez and Matthew Parsons. They will be starting work on November 2. Please welcome these two new consultants to the adult education family.

The California Adult Literacy Professional Development Project (CALPRO) is pleased to offer California adult educators the opportunity to participate in the 2009-2010 CALPRO Professional Learning Communities (PLC) Institute. All California Department of Education, Adult Education Office WIA Title II or State Apportionment funded agencies are eligible to apply. The application is due November 6 and the first part of the training will take place Dec. 7-9 in Sacramento. Answers to Frequently Asked Questions and additional details appear on News and Events page of the CALPRO Web site.

CASAS Data Portal
CASAS Data Portal Provides Access to WIA II Performance Outcomes for 2008-09 at the state and local agency level. The California WIA Title II NRS Federal table data for program year 2008-09 will be posted on the Data Portal in early November. Visit the CASAS data portal to compare your agency data with California state goals and performance and performance of other local agencies, counties, geographical regions, provider types, and enrollment size. All data is available for download into Microsoft Excel®.

Winter Online Courses
Beginning Nov. 18, the California Adult Literacy Professional Development Project (CALPRO) will open registration for its Winter 2010 facilitated online courses. Each course explores a different topic: learner persistence, teaching adults with learning disabilities, managing ESL multilevel classes, and using questioning strategies to improve instruction. WIA Title II Assessment and Accountability Fall 2009 Regional and Online Trainings
Over 900 administrators, coordinators, instructors, and other agency staff have participated in WIA II regional or online training for assessment, accountability this program year. CASAS is offering additional Fall 2009 Statewide Regional and Web-based Trainings available for all WIA Title II 225/231 and EL Civics funded agencies. Included are online self-paced courses delivered through the Moodle course management delivery system. These online courses are a great way to ensure that all staff receive training and make the connection from assessment to instruction and improved learning outcomes.
