Danish Study Team Visit

A group of adult educators from Denmark will be visiting California October 1-10, hosted by the Adult Education Office of CDE. They will visit Palo Alto Adult School, San Mateo Adult School, Santa Rosa Junior College and Charles A. Jones Skills Center in Sacramento along with some K12 sites and OTAN. They are particularly interested in the use of technology in adult education.

Orientation for New Administrators

The CDE Adult Education Office is offering a free orientation for new and novice administrators. Receive information from CDE that will assist new leaders in their work in the world of adult education. Save the Date, November 9, 2009! To register, call 916-322-2175.

New Learner Persistence Web Site

The New England Learner Resource Center (NELRC) has launched a new Adult Learner Persistence Website where a wide variety of tools, strategies and research to help adult students "stay on their learning paths" can be found.

Fall 2009 Issue

The Fall 2009 issue of CALPROgress contains articles by state and national leaders examining the role of adult education as an indispensible partner to districts and communities, collaborations between adult schools and community colleges, collaboration with the workforce development system, and collaborations in professional development, among other topics. Sample Test Items Available: CASAS Government & History and CASAS eTests®

Familiarity with sample test items can reduce student anxiety and help testing go smoothly. To this end, Government and History sample items (supporting the new Forms 965 and 966) are now available. An abridged version of CASAS eTests (also available now) demonstrates computer delivery of sample reading and math questions from various test series.

CASAS eTests® Version 3.1 Now Available

Released in September 2009, the latest version of CASAS eTests includes: New assessments (Government Reading/Secondary Level, Form 80 Reading and Listening Appraisal), Data Backup and Export Schedulers, Vista and Internet Explorer 8 Compatibility, and Backup/Restore Function. TOPSpro® 5.0 SP6 Now Available

The latest version of CASAS "Tracking of Programs and Students" database management system – TOPSpro Version 5.0 SP6 – is now available. New forms include Government and History (965 and 966), and Life and Work (84RX). Users can upgrade automatically via Live Update on their local installation, or by downloading from the TOPSpro Download Center (login required). H1N1 Flu and Distance Learning

Schools are preparing for the possibility of a large flu epidemic this winter, and looking to distance learning to bridge the gap if schools are forced to close. Don’t forget that the Innovation and Alternative Instructional Deliver application is available now and due on Oct. 16. Also, Edweek is offering a free webinar on October 8 on using distance learning in the event of school closure for health or other reasons.

Susan Handy, Principal of Bakersfield Adult School, will be honored as one of four outstanding "Women with a Heart for Bakersfield." These women are honored based on their exceptional community service and leadership that has made a positive and lasting impact in Bakersfield through noteworthy service, leadership, and mentorship.

Administrators Forum Oct. 13

Distance Learning Forum Oct. 9 & 23

On 10/9, hear about the skills learners need to be successful online learners, and on 10/23 hear about some successful implementations of adult education online instruction.

Regional Professional Development Workshops

The California Adult Literacy Professional Development Project (CALPRO) is coordinating regionally offered face-to-face workshops. Adult educators may now register for workshops such as Organizing and Managing ABE Instruction, Enhancing Learner Persistence, Effective Lesson Planning, and Learner Goal Setting. Register online.

GED Academy

CCAE is again sponsoring the GED Academy in several different locations this fall. The academy consists of two Saturday mornings, and the flyer and registration form are available now.

Professional Development: Online Options from CALPRO

Adult educators who act swiftly can still find a place in the facilitated online courses from the California Adult Literacy Professional Development Project (CALPRO). In each course a subject expert facilitates class discussions on a different topic: teaching students with learning disabilities, multilevel ESL instruction, lesson planning, and adult learning. Within a given week, participants can log in when convenient to hear the latest research and do application activities.
